About Carers Self Help Hub
Carers have told us what matters to them is having the confidence of knowing that the care they provide is safe and meets the needs of those that they care for. Caring can often be thrust upon us at short notice, for example, the sudden illness of a relative which results in a long-term condition requiring ongoing care and support.
At Carers Matter Norfolk, we believe the unpaid care workforce need to be provided with training and development, as much as paid care workers.
Some of the most common reasons for your cared-for to be admitted to hospital are:
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI aka water infection)
- Chest Infection
- Pressure Sores
Malnutrition and a mental health crisis of either the cared-for or carer can also result in hospital admission. Carers we’ve worked with say they want condition-specific information (e.g. Parkinson’s) but also support with basic care and how to:
- Avoid UTIs, Pressure Sores, Chest Infections and Falls
- Keep the person you care for hydrated
- Protect your own physical health and wellbeing (e.g. back care)
- Support the cared-for to mobilise
- Navigate through the Health and Social Care system
- Communicate with professionals and their cared-for
- Look after their emotional health and wellbeing
- Use technology to find information & advice about the cared-for person’s needs
Our Education and Training Team have co-developed the Carers Matter Norfolk Carers Self-Help Hub with carers throughout Norfolk.
It brings together, in one place, online learning to support carers with both the practical aspects of caring and your own health and wellbeing.
Whether you are an adult caring for another adult, a child or young person caring for a parent or sibling, or a parent caring for a child, there is learning on the hub that will meet your needs.
Topics on the Carers Self-Help Hub include Caring Basics, Mental Health, Dementia, Emotional Wellbeing, Managing Behaviour, First Aid, Nutrition & Diet, and Carers Rights. Plus much more.
The design of the Carers Self-Help Hub, from the background to the categories and topics, was led by what matters to carers, and carers will continue to shape its ongoing development.
You can browse the site and access the resources, or for an enhanced experience you can register with the site. This will enable you to save favourite resources and also opt in to receive email notifications when new resources are added.
