As part of Carers Week, Caring Together Charity has three ‘Introduction to Carer Friendly Tick Award webinars’ coming up to help organisations identify and support carers. Places can be booked free of charge but are limited so please book early.

More than three in five of us will become an unpaid carer at some point in our life. We will look after a family member or friend who needs our help because of illness, disability, poor mental health problem or addiction. With a few changes all organisations can make a difference to unpaid carers. There will be carers registered at your doctor’s surgery, on your hospital’s wards, in your workforce and in your community.

The Carer Friendly Tick Award will ensure that you are leaving no stone unturned in the support that you can provide carers, as well as recognising the great work that you are doing. Is this something that would like to learn more about? If so, please book a space on the Caring Together’s Carer Friendly Tick webinars during Carers Week and share with other professionals.

Why recognising unpaid carers is so important

Many people looking after a family member or friend do not realise they are a carer. And it also may not be recognised by their employer, place of education, or those involved in providing healthcare to them or the person they care for.

This has an impact on the unpaid carer as it means they do not get the support they need. But as well as affecting the carer this can also mean:

  • Employers losing valuable staff members.
  • Patients having worse physical and mental health, increased chances of hospital admittance and higher risk of failed discharge.
  • Carers involved in community groups and organisations having their participation affected.

So, making sure you are able to recognise and connect carers with the support they need has benefits to you as well as the unpaid carer.

How our webinars can help you

At each event they will talk through how carers can be affected by their caring role and how you can become one of more than 120 organisations that hold the Carer Friendly Tick Award.

These awards are given to organisations that have five practical standards in place to help them identify and support carers. They will explain to you how each of these can work for you.
